Phnom Penh, March 14, 2024: The salt fields of Kampot, a coastal province in Cambodia, are emerging as a new draw for tourists, blending the beauty of traditional salt farming with the potential for agro-tourism. This shift has not only piqued the interest of travelers but has also spurred local entrepreneurs to venture into food and beverage services, enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Soy Sinol, Director of the Kampot Provincial Department of Tourism, highlighted the trend of increasing visits to these picturesque fields. The area's strategic location—proximal to the provincial town, nearby beaches, and an upcoming tourism port—adds to its appeal as a multifaceted destination.

The region is preparing for a resurgence in tourism activities, particularly with the anticipated reopening of the Cambodia Natural Salt Production Exhibition Centre, also known as the Salt Museum. The facility, which had been temporarily closed due to the pandemic, is set to welcome visitors again, offering educational insights into the local salt production process.

January 2024 witnessed approximately 8,000 foreign tourists exploring Kampot, a number that surged to around 12,000 by February, with expectations for continued growth in March. This influx of tourists underscores the province's growing appeal as a unique travel destination.

Kampot boasts 3,000 hectares of operational salt fields, according to the Department of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation. With favorable weather conditions, the province achieved a salt production of 20,000 tonnes by early March and anticipates reaching up to 100,000 tonnes. This remarkable production capacity, coupled with the area's natural and cultural richness, positions Kampot's salt fields as a promising site for sustainable tourism development.
